A refreshing change

For well over a year, I have been happily running SolusOS Linux on all four of my computers. SolusOS has always been an amazing operating system, that provided me with a GNOME 2 look and feel, all the while running very fast and with a small footprint. When Ikey Doherty released a SolusOS 2 Alpha .iso, I was all over it and really enjoyed using it. It was based on Debian Wheezy, but provided me with all of the current and up-to-date software that I wanted to run.

But, whilst running it, Ikey decided it was time to make a radical change in direction. Rather than continuing to try to expland on a Debian base, the decision was made to toss everything out and start with a clean slate, rewriting SolusOS 2 into what is now commonly known as SolusOS NextGen. I was experiencing absolutely no difficulties running the Alpha 7 release and continued to do so. But in the last couple weeks, it has become clear that trying to run a deprecated operating system that is still getting updates from the Debian repositories was likely not the best way to go. Stability went out the window. And with SolusOS 2 NextGen still in the thick of development, I needed to find something that I could rely on.

Linux Mint 14 'Nadia'

I just happened to have a copy of the Cinnamon version of Linux Mint 14 ‘Nadia‘ laying on my desk, so I wiped SolusOS off the machine and installed Mint.  And I am finding there were a lot of reasons I had used Mint for as long as I had, prior to discovering SolusOS.  I don’t know what it is about the greens and the grays, but I really do like the styling of Mint.  And whilst Cinnamon will never be Consort, it still works well enough.

For the last 3 or 4 weeks, I have been eagerly checking Google+ and the SolusOS forums, for any sightings of a SolusOS 2 NextGen Alpha release.  But with Mint running as smoothly as it is, I don’t think I am really too eager to see even a Release Candidate version of SolusOS 2.  Maybe when there is a Gold release, I will look into switching back over, but for now, Mint is doing everything I require.  I never imagined I would ever move away from SolusOS, but the change has certainly not been a painful one, that much is certain.

Welcome back, old friend…
